A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the old saying goes. But is seeing really believing? With the advent of wonderful image-editing tools such as Photoshop (and its open-source counterpart, GIMPshop), anyone can reconstruct visual reality. Reasons for altering images can range from innocent (removing that annoying red eye from a family photograph) to blatantly creating false impressions about celebrities and political situations. Media consumers need to be cognizant of the techniques that are sometimes employed to manipulate public opinion. Not surprisingly, tampering with media is a practice that goes back well over a hundred years. Even respected news outlets (such as Reuters with its disastrous Adnan Hajj photographs as well as other lapses in judgment) have had to deal with questionable photographic offerings. The message here is clear: be critical of what you think you see.
